Milwaukee breweries urged to add LHP, which has dominated them in the past

The Milwaukee Brewers have completed their 40-man roster ahead of the 2025 MLB season. Their latest move, trading for right-handed reliever Grant Anderson and then naming Tyler Jay, was the final piece of the puzzle. At least for now.

As Milwaukee prepares for spring training and the upcoming season, there are still some questions to be answered on the roster. One of them concerns the starting rotation and who will be in it. Last year’s starting rotation included Colin Rea, Joe Ross, Jakob Junis and DL Hall. Rea, Ross and Junis are dead, and Hall is no guarantee he’ll get the job after struggling in the rookie role but performing well off the field.

Brandon Woodruff is expected to play a role in the starting rotation in 2025 after missing much of the last two seasons with injuries, but he may not be ready for Opening Day.

After using 17 different pitchers as starters/openers last year, many believe the Brewers could benefit from more starting pitching depth.

Milwaukee Brewers are encouraged to sign LHP Jose Quintana

One of Milwaukee’s biggest moves of the offseason was trading the two-time All-Star for closer Devin Williams New York Yankees for left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes and hitter Caleb Durbin. While Durbin was the Brewers’ top target due to the years of control he still has over the club, adding Cortes to the starting rotation was an added bonus.

The truth, however, is that Freddy Peralta and Cortes are the only current Brewers pitchers who made 30 or more major league starts last season. For Patrick McAvoy z Sports illustrations“That was where the New York Mets starter was Jose Quintana could come into play. He had a two-year, $26 million contract with the Mets, but is now a free agent. He’s a massive reason why the Mets were able to surprise some people last year.

Last season, Quintana was 10-10 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 31 starts for the New York Mets. He also has eight seasons in his career in which he made at least 30 starts.

There is also the fact that Quintana has been a certified Brewers hitter in the past. For StatmuzaHe is 9-7 and has an ERA of 2.98 in 23 appearances against Milwaukee. After a defeat against Milwaukee on May 10, 2019, he suffered another defeat against them only on September 28, 2022, i.e. for over three years and seven starts.

Of course, signing Quintana will largely depend on what type of contract he wants. Going into the season at age 36, he likely won’t sign a long-term contract. However, he will likely be asking for much more than Wade Miley, who himself has expressed interest in returning to Milwaukee, even on a minor league deal.

The conclusion is that Breweries released just $1.35 million on free agents this offseason. It’s strenuous to imagine them giving $10 million or more to a single free agent pitcher entering the season at age 36.
