The Milwaukee Breweries they have a reputation for making unpopular decisions. Trading Josh Hader midway through the 2022 season and Corbin Burnes last winter are two great examples. Still, MLB Insider doesn’t think impending free agent Willy Adames will suffer the same fate.
Willy Adames is off to a great start to the 2024 season.
After exceeding all expectations in 2021, Willy Adames faced criticism in both 2022 and 2023. His power numbers continued unabated, but he posted an on-base percentage of just .298 in 2022 and .310 a year later. This year his on-base percentage is .332, his run rate is much lower, and yet he is still doing damage in the field as he has seven home runs and 29 RBI.
One MLB insider believes the Milwaukee Brewers are unlikely to trade Willy Adames.
MLB insider Recently published by Ken Rosenthal column that singled out Willy Adames. Rosenthal touched on how Hader’s previous trade shook the players and tarnished the clubhouse, the Brewers’ contingency plan failed and Milwaukee missed the postseason by one game. His view on Adames is that the Brewers are unlikely to do it again because they realize the internal damage a mid-season trade last caused when they were in the playoffs.
What would be the Milwaukee Brewers’ contingency plan if they traded Willy Adames?
When the Brewers traded Josh Hader in 2022, they planned to make up for the loss with Taylor Rogers and Trevor Rosenthal. Unfortunately it didn’t work. If Milwaukee trades Adames this summer, it has several internal replacement options, with Brice Turang and Joey Ortiz being the two top candidates to take over at shortstop. Both players are currently successful, but Rosenthal raised an fascinating question about whether they are successful in part because Adames provides them with veteran cover.
“Adames, 28, can probably rest easy. If the Brewers sold him, they could be in trouble Brice Turang stop and take advantage Joey Ortiz and others at second base. However, the club’s authorities are aware of the internal damage they have caused with the Hader deal, as well as the fact that parting with the everyday player and team leader could once again disturb the peace in the club. Turang and Ortiz can succeed in part because Adames provides them with veteran cover.”
-Ken Rosenthal
It will be fascinating to see if the Brewers keep Adames for the entire season or not. If they don’t trade him, the only compensation they can get is a draft pick (assuming they extend a qualifying offer this offseason). Milwaukee is currently in a great position in the rankings, but there are still two months until the trade deadline.
