The Milwaukee Breweries, both led by David Stearns and Matt Arnold, have been aggressive in the trading department. Some offers are successful, others are not. Here we will look at examples of both.
Which two former Milwaukee Brewers employees are we looking at?
The first trade we will look at took place in March 2022. It was the David Stearns deal, which sent David Fry to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for JC Mejia. Second, we’ll take a look at Matt Arnold’s trade from last offseason, when he parted ways with Tyrone Taylor and Adrian Houser.
The former Milwaukee Brewers’ partnership with the Cleveland Guardians is not working out in Brew Crews’ favor.
Since Milwaukee acquired JC Mejia, he has been suspended twice from Major League Baseball for violating the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by testing positive for a drug called Stanozolol. His first suspension lasted 82 games, and his second suspension lasted the entire season. Overall, he threw just 13.2 innings for the Brewers with an ERA of 8.56 and is no longer with the team.
On the other hand, David Fry is showing great flashes with the Cleveland Guardians. While not a great defender, he is versatile and played in 2024 as a catcher, corner outfielder and both outfield positions. He currently has a 1.076 OPS in 109 plate appearances this year. In 2023, he had a .735 OPS in 58 games played.
The trade of one of the former Milwaukee Brewers with the New York Mets is already working in their favor.
Before the start of the 2024 season, the Brewers traded Adrian Houser and Tyrone Taylor in exchange for minor leaguer Coleman Crow. Both Houser and Taylor have no chance of playing in the minor leagues and are struggling early with the Mets. Houser has a 7.78 ERA in nine games (seven starts), and Taylor hasn’t consistently posted mighty numbers as he has a -0.1 fWAR and an 84 wRC+.
As for Crow, the pitcher did undergo Tommy John surgery in 2023. Milwaukee traded him knowing that pitching in 2024 was not a guarantee, but they liked his upside. Even considering Crow hasn’t pitched any action in the Brewers organization, the combination of Houser and Taylor’s penniless showings and the $7.00 million Milwaukee saved in this deal gives them an early advantage.
