Milwaukee Breweries trade deadline added Nick Mears is struggling right now. The reliever has given up five earned runs in his last two appearances and has a 6.75 ERA in 10.2 innings since joining the Brew Crew, which includes giving up four home runs. Despite that, there are reasons he could be kept in the lineup. Let’s look at two of those reasons.
Reason #1 why struggling Nick Mears won’t be removed from the Milwaukee Brewers energetic roster.
When the Brewers acquired Nick Mears from the Colorado Rockies, they gave up a top-30 prospect, pitcher Bradley Blalock, as well as another pitcher, Yujanyera Herrera, who had been playing above average in Single-A. Milwaukee’s decision to invest in Mears by trading away two prospects indicates that they believe he can be a key bullpen player for them. It seems highly unlikely that Matt Arnold and company would give up on Mears within a month of acquiring him.

Reason No. 2 why struggling Nick Mears won’t be removed from the Milwaukee Brewers energetic roster.
The way MLB rosters work is that the energetic roster consists of 26 players (the exception is September, when the roster is expanded by two players), and players must be on the 40-man roster to be on the energetic roster. Players can be sent to the minor leagues without being subject to waivers as long as they have options. Unfortunately, when the Brewers acquired Nick Mears, all of his minor league options were used up. Despite his on-field issues, Mears has enough potential that trying to remove him from the energetic roster is risky and would likely be picked up by another team.
Considering that Nick Mears cost two prospects, couldn’t be moved to the minor leagues, and the fact that he’s been with the Milwaukee Brewers for less than a month, it seems likely that he won’t lose his spot on the team. On the contrary, prospect Jacob Misiorowski is knocking on the substantial leagues’ door, and if the Brew Crew wants to get their best team into the playoffs, they may have to put Nick Mears on waivers.
