Milwaukee Brewers: 2 veteran pitchers in danger of losing roster spot

This Milwaukee Breweries The pitching staff has been plagued by a number of injuries this year, with Tobias Myers coming out of nowhere to become a top rotation player, minor leaguer Jared Koenig becoming a trusted bullpen member, Trevor Megill being an interim closer, and a host of other things happening.

That said, the Brew Crew is close to welcoming back pitchers like DL Hall and Bryan Hudson back from injuries. Their returns mean that some roster changes will be necessary. We take a look at two experienced pitchers who could be in danger of losing their roster spots.

One pitcher the Brewers may have to cut ties with in the near future is Joe Ross. Ross signed a major league contract in the offseason despite his last major league experience coming in 2021. He posted a 4.50 ERA in his first nine starts before a back injury cost him several months of the season.

Upon his return, Ross found himself on the outside looking in to the starting rotation, as Milwaukee went out and acquired Aaron Civale and Frankie Montas. Ross still has value as a long reliever, but with DL Hall nearing his return, inserting Hall in Ross’ spot would likely be an upgrade. The Brewers will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster after activating Hall from the 60-day IL, and Ross seems like a potential option to make that happen.

Another player the Brewers may have to make a tough decision on is Hoby Milner. In years past, Milner has been a reliable left-handed option from the bullpen, but this year he’s hovered around a 4.92 ERA. Milner has yet to accrue five years of MLB experience and has a minor league option remaining, so he could find himself at Triple-A Nashville if Bryan Hudson is activated.

The Brewers could activate both DL Hall and Bryan Hudson as early as today, August 9. It will be captivating to see what roster moves are made when that happens.
