Milwaukee Brewers: 2020 second-round pick named to the Nicaraguan World Baseball Classic qualifying squad

Pitchers and catchers for the Milwaukee Brewers have less than five weeks of preparation before reporting to spring training. Milwaukee will begin exhibition play in delayed February, facing the Cincinnati Reds in a split lineup. However, one MLB prospect will get his cleats soiled in meaningful games in March, and the former second-round pick will suit up for Team Nicaragua in qualifying for the World Baseball Classic.

Reports emerged on Tuesday that Milwaukee Brewers minor leaguer Freddy Zamora plans to compete in the WBC under the Nicaraguan flag. A major AAA-Nashville stop last season, Zamora will try its hand at securing a qualifying spot for the 2026 World Baseball Classic for the country.

According to World Baseball Classic writer Shawn Spradling:

Brewers’ perspective Freddy Zamora will represent Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic qualifiers. Nicaraguan SS was selected in the 2nd round of the MLB draft (No. 53) and has had some unpleasant moments defensively.

Zamora, a second-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft of the Milwaukee Brewers, will play for Nicaragua in March during the World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. Nicaragua will face Spain, Chinese Taipei and South Africa, with the first and second place finishers advancing to the 2026 World Baseball Classic.

Zamora spent four seasons with the Brewers, playing primarily as a shortstop for AA-Biloxi. In 318 games, Zamora hit 18 home runs, stole 40 bases and hit .248. He has little bat power and was known for his ability to play defense, run the bases and hit into contact as a two-year starter for the Miami Hurricanes in 2018-2019. Zamora is not on the Brewers’ 40-man roster and is eligible for next year’s Rule 5 Draft.

In 2026, the World Baseball Classic will match the intensity and fervor of 2023, when Japan defeated the United States in an impressive 3-2 final. In the victory, MLB superstar and three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani defeated teammate Mike Trout, also the MVP, in the final match.
