Milwaukee Brewers pitchers and catchers will report on February 13 this year, and the team’s first full workout will take place a few days later on February 18. With less than a month before spring training, here’s a recap of the moves the Brew Crew has made so far.
Free agent signings
The The Milwaukee Brewers have only made two MLB signings in the offseason when they both pitch. Technically, Grant Wolfram signed a split contract, which means that as long as he is on the 40-man roster, his 2025 salary will be prorated based on time spent in the major and minor leagues. Elvin Rodriguez was the next player to sign an MLB contract and has had a great season in Japan.
The Brewers, on the other hand, have made several minor league free agent deals. Here are all the acquisitions.
- C George Alfaro
- 1B Jake Bauers
- LHP Bruce Zimmerman
- RHP Deivi Garcia
- LHP Thomas Pannone
- RF Jared Oliva
- RHP Jose Arias
- C David Garcia
- 2B Antoni Seigler
- C Ramon Rodriguez
- Blademir Restituyo
- Jimmy Herron’s LF
- 2B Raynel Delgado
It’s worth noting that RHP Jon Duplantier was originally signed by Milwaukee, but was released to pursue other opportunities. Additionally, LHP Connor Thomas was selected by the Cardinals in the Rule 5 draft and is on the 40-man roster.
Trade
As expected, the Brewers traded Devin Williams this offseason. They also made another tiny transaction that helped potential Mason Molina find a up-to-date home. The players acquired by Milwaukee are LHP Nestor Cortes, INF Caleb Durbin and RHP Grant Anderson.
So far, I’m evaluating the Milwaukee Brewers this offseason
All in all, it was a relatively still offseason for Matt Arnold and company. However, they are the current National League champions. While they lost Willy Adames in free agency and closer Williams in a trade, the enormous majority of their teenage core is under team control (with more lend a hand on the way), and the on-field situation was no longer clear as Williams recovered after suffering an injury last year.
That being said, they didn’t necessarily have to do much. A C+ rating seems fair considering they did what was expected of them, but not much more. While they likely considered upgrading first base and bringing in another experienced infielder, preferably someone who can play third base, nothing worked out. Instead, they will rely on the warm streak of Rhys Hoskins in the corners and lean on the combination of Durbin, Tyler Black, Andruw Monasterio, Oliver Dunn and potentially Sal Frelick.
