This Milwaukee Breweries They entered September exceeding expectations at the start of the season. Despite numerous injuries, they overcame adversity and met PECOTA’s expected win count on Aug. 30, when the model predicted only 79 wins. Now, at 81-57, they have the biggest lead in the division in Major League Baseball, but with a month to go, their work is still far from over, and they still have several critical series to play.
We take a look at four upcoming September series featuring the Milwaukee Brewers that could have major playoff implications.
Series No. 1: September 13-15 – Arizona Diamondbacks.
The reigning National League champions had a ponderous start to the season, but now they’re in the chunky of the playoff race. They’re six games behind the National League West as of Sept. 2, but they’ll head into the postseason as the #5 seed (Wild Card). San Diego is currently a half-game ahead of them as the #4 seed, with the higher seeds (#4 vs. #5) hosting a best-of-three Wild Card series.
Series No. 2: September 16-18 – Philadelphia Phillies.
After facing the Diamondbacks at the end of their last trip to the West Coast, the Brewers will face the Phillies in Milwaukee. Philadelphia and Milwaukee are neck and neck for the second spot in the playoffs, with the top two seeds receiving a bye in the first round. The Brewers were swept by the Phillies in three games earlier this year, so if Milwaukee wins all three of them at home, the tiebreaker will come down to each team’s record in their division. The Brewers are currently 30-17 against their division opponents, while the Phillies are 23-15.
Series No. 3: September 19-22 – Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Arizona Diamondbacks make it onto this list twice, as Milwaukee will face them in a total of seven games in September. This really shows how tough of a schedule the Brewers have down the stretch, as they will face playoff contenders in an attempt to clinch the division championship as well as the top seed in the playoffs. These teams will not make it effortless for them, and Milwaukee will need to continue playing good baseball to earn what they have worked so challenging for all season.
Series No. 4: September 27-29 – New York Mets.
This year, the Brewers opened the season against the Mets in New York and will end it against the Mets, but in Milwaukee. The Mets surprisingly found themselves among the playoff favorites and are one game out of a postseason spot as of September 2. It is likely that the final series of the regular season will have playoff implications for both teams.
