Milwaukee Breweries Sixth-ranked prospect Carlos Rodriguez made his MLB debut on Tuesday, June 11 against the Toronto Blue Jays. In his debut, he threw just 3.2 innings, gave up seven hits, allowed two earned runs and struck out four. Toronto ended up winning 3-0 and handed Rodriguez the loss, but here we’ll focus on five numbers worth knowing about his MLB debut.
The Milwaukee Brewers used 12 different starting pitchers this season.
Carlos Rodriguez, who started for the Brewers against the Blue Jays, was the 12th different pitcher they used to start a game this season. Currently tied with the Atlanta Braves for the most points in the league. They are also approaching a franchise record where the Seattle Pilots used 17 different starting pitchers during the 1969 season. The Brewers used 13 different starting pitchers seven times during the year, with the last time being in 2017.
Eight different players made their MLB debuts this season for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers are a youthful team, but eight MLB debuts in the first three months of the regular season is a lot. In addition to Carlos Rodriguez, Jackson Chourio, Oliver Dunn, Tobias Myers, Tyler Black, Chris Roller, James Meeker and Robert Gasser will also make their debuts this year. Only the Oakland Athletics have had more MLB debuts this season (nine).
Carlos Rodriguez is only the third player in the club’s history to wear number 00.
It’s been more than two decades since a Milwaukee player last wore No. 00, but that’s the number Carlos Rodriguez chose on the back of his jersey. The last Brewers player to wear the number 00 was also pitcher Curtis Leskanic (2000–2001). The only other player to wear this number was Jeffrey Leonard in 1988.
Carlos Rodriguez is the first Nicaraguan-born player to play in the massive leagues for the Brewers.
Although Carlos Rodriguez was born in Nicaragua, he attended high school at Miami Christian School and studied at Florida SouthWestern. He was selected in the 2021 MLB Draft by Milwaukee in the sixth round. Regardless, he represented Team Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic and became the first Nicaraguan-born player to play in the massive leagues for the Brewers, becoming the 16th player in MLB history.
Carlos Rodriguez threw six different pitches in his MLB debut.
On the mound, Carlos Rodriguez doesn’t have much speed, but he throws a lot of different pitches. It involves effectively mixing them up and commanding them in the zone to keep hitters off balance. In his MLB debut, he threw a total of 71 pitches, tracking six different pitch types. In total, he threw 16 four-seam fastballs, 15 sliders, 14 sinkers, 11 cutters, 10 hops and five curveballs.
Although Rodriguez wished his MLB debut had been better, he kept the Brewers in the game and lasted many innings with runners on base. Considering how depleted Milwaukee’s pitching staff is, he should get another chance to pitch for them.
