Milwaukee Brewers: A disastrous fifth inning was a major factor in the Wild Card series loss in Game 1

The Milwaukee Brewers got a taste of their own medicine in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series when their opponent, the New York Mets, scored five runs in the fifth inning with two outs. This was due to two unusual defensive errors by a team that prides itself on its defense. Here we take a closer look at how the Brewers fared in the fifth inning.

New York Mets second baseman Jose Iglesias (11) makes a throw from first base to Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Joel Payamps (31) during the fifth inning of the wild card playoff game against the New York Mets Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, state of Wisconsin.

In the fifth inning, Joel Payamps relieved Freddy Peralta. Payamps was assisted by Jackson Chourio for the first out, while Chourio grabbed the wall off a jump shot to record the first out. Later, Chourio’s batter took the wrong route on an air ball and was unable to catch the ball when he tried to pop it. Mets batter Tyrone Taylor was credited with a double in the game.

After Taylor’s double, Payamps got an simple fly and a second out. From there, seven straight Mets reached base safely against Payamps and Aaron Ashby. Francisco Lindor walked, Jose Iglesias reached on an infield single where Payamps was overdue to cover first base, Mark Vientos singled (Willy Adames bobbed the ball while attempting to slide, it would have been a arduous play with an out) Pete Alonso was walked, J.D. Martinez chose and Starling Marte went.

Brewers savior Aaron Ashby faced five batters in the inning and recorded no outs. Nick Mears replaced him and left the bases loaded when Tyrone Taylor flew out to end the inning.

The Brewers bullpen and defense have been strengths all season long.

This year, Milwaukee had the best ERA in the National League at 3.11, and their defense was one of the best units in the league. Unfortunately, both hit the ground running in the first game against the Mets, with one inning being the major difference in the outcome of that game.

On Wednesday, October 2, the Brewers and Mets will face off in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series. Frankie Montas will get the ball for Milwaukee and Sean Manaea will get the ball for New York.
