Milwaukee Brewers: A look at some of the Willy Adames and Devin Williams rumors that surfaced during the 2024 GM meetings.

The Milwaukee Brewers have two players (technically one former player currently) in Willy Adames and Devin Williams who are sizzling topics throughout baseball. Willy Adames is a free agent and is expected to sign a massive long-term contract, while Devin Williams is entering his final year of team control and is a trade candidate. Here, we will take a look at some of the rumors that emerged during the 2024 AGM held on November 5-7.

Last week, there was a lot of talk about Willy Adames being open to staying in Milwaukee for less money, moving to third base, and even having two contract offers on the table from outside organizations. Here we describe who disclosed what.

At The Athletic, Will Sammon and Katie Woo were the driving force behind many of Willy Adames’ speeches. They provided a quote from Adames, who stated, “I would be willing to stay in Milwaukee for less,” and also revealed that he was open to changing his position.

MLB insider Mike Rodriguez revealed that the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers have contract offers for Willy Adames. He reported that the deal with the Mets was for seven years, worth over $160 million, and that the plan was for him to play third base.

An MLB Insider revealed the Milwaukee Brewers’ intentions for the 2025 season

Jim Bowden, an MLB analyst and Insider at CBS Sports, wrote an article about the Brewers’ intentions for the 2025 season. To summarize, he was told that Milwaukee wants to start essentially the same team it played in 2024. He mentioned specifically Willy Adames as part of their plans, but they did not discuss the potential loss of Devin Williams.

Keep diving Bowdens’ article, indicated that if the Brewers couldn’t keep Willy Adames, they would replace his offensive production by adding another bat. He clearly indicated that Milwaukee is comfortable with Brice Turang at shortstop. There was no mention of Joey Ortiz taking over at the stop.

Devin Williams has generated a lot of industry buzz during GM meetings

MLB Network insider Mark Feinsand provided some insight trade discussions that swirled around Devin Williams in GM meetings. He confirmed that there had been a lot of discussion about trading Williams, provided some as expected quotes from GM Matt Arnold and, interestingly, revealed that one of the key points of discussion was when Milwaukee would trade him.

Matt Arnold is currently focused on keeping Devin Williams as Brewer, according to Mark Feinsand, but as expected, he admitted that he needs to remain open to trading him.

“I would say right now we are focusing on him being a brewer because he is really good and talented. We consider him the best closer in baseball; it certainly makes our premier league team better and that’s our focus right now.

-Matt Arnold

GM meetings indicate that a rival Brewers executive believes a deal for Devin Williams may not occur until closer to the trade deadline. Feinsaid wrote: “A rival executive believes the Brewers can keep Williams in the offseason and then wait until July, when demand for replacement players is always high and rivals are willing to pay more with a postseason ahead of them.”

If Milwaukee keeps Devin Williams and trades him in July, it will be a major shock to Brewers fans. A few years ago, the team traded Josh Hader at the deadline, which led to the team’s demise and missed the playoffs. The Brewers are expected to be a playoff contender again in 2025, so an offseason trade would have less of an impact on team chemistry/club morale and would make more sense.
