Milwaukee Breweries Left-hander Aaron Ashby is currently in the second year of a five-year deal that bought out all of his arbitration years and has club options for two more years. Unfortunately, he has not found success after initially providing a spark in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He has just two appearances in the majors this year and has now undergone a huge turnaround in the minor leagues.
Aaron Ashby has undergone a huge transition in the lower leagues, but he’s seeing the results.
Since August, Aaron Ashby has been coming out of the bullpen exclusively. He used to come out of the bullpen in a few games, but now he has seven straight relief appearances and has only worked 1.0-2.0 innings at a time. He has been successful so far, as he has not given up a single run in his last five appearances and his velocity is back up to 98 MPH.
Aaron Ashby has been really enjoying his adjustment to the bullpen lately. He scored 98 points tonight 👀

Are the Milwaukee Brewers going to permanently move Aaron Ashby to the bullpen?
There have been no reports yet regarding the long-term prospects of Aaron Ashby’s role. He hasn’t had much success as a starting pitcher or long reliever, so if he’s had success early on in that transition and his velocity has returned to pre-shoulder surgery levels, there’s a question of whether he should stay in the bullpen full-time.
Will Aaron Ashby’s contract be considered a bust if he permanently moves to the bullpen?
This year, Aaron Ashby is making a modest $1.45 million. He’ll make $3.45 million, $5.70 million, and $7.70 million in future years. His 2028 club option is worth $9.0 million, and his 2029 club option is worth $13.0 million. For context, Devin Williams is making $7.0 million in 2024 as one of the game’s top relievers.
Even if Aaron Ashby rejuvenates his career as a reliever and finds success in the MLB from a contract perspective, he will be significantly overpaid. The alternatives are to release him and still be responsible for his salary or work out a deal in which the receiving team would have to be willing to take the remaining salary.
