This Milwaukee Breweries and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a trade that sends Nick Mears to the Brew Crew in exchange for two prospects. In the deal, Milwaukee parted ways with pitchers Bradley Blalock and Yujanjer Herrera.
Nick Mears is a controlled reliever with potential.
Nick Mears, 27, is a pitcher who has team control through the 2027 season, with the caveat that he no longer has any minor league options. He will enter his first of three years of arbitration this offseason. His 4.93 career ERA isn’t great, but his fastball is a great value, as it’s already averaging 97 MPH, and he’s getting great extension, which results in more perceived velocity. He also has a slider in the mid-80s and a curveball in the low 80s.
Who did the Milwaukee Brewers give up in this trade?
40-man roster member Bradley Blalock is one of the pitchers the Brewers gave up in the trade. He was acquired at the trade deadline last year when Milwaukee sent Luis Urias to the Boston Red Sox. Blalock has only played in one massive league this year.
The second pitcher the Brewers traded was 20-year-old Yujanjer Herrera. He split time as a starter and reliever in the minor leagues and had a 2.91 ERA between the Low-A Carolina Mudcats and High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers this year. His career ERA in the minor leagues is 5.05.
Will the Milwaukee Brewers make more trades?
One of the Brewers’ goals heading into the July 30 trade deadline is to acquire pitchers who can provide length. Nick Mears doesn’t fit into that category, but as mentioned, he has a ton of upside. Expect Milwaukee to continue to be busy in the pitching market.
