The Milwaukee Brewers still have some offseason work to do as they approach spring training in 2025. In particular, they must continue to replenish their pitching depth. So far Colin Rea has not been shortlisted, Joe Ross has signed with Philadelphia PhilliesFrankie Montas signed with the New York Mets and Bryse Wilson signed with the Chicago White Sox.
While the Brewers added some additions this offseason, highlighted by the acquisition of shortstop Nestor Cortes in the Devin Williams trade, their starting rotation still remains unclear. For this reason, they may consider signing with one of their long-time division rivals who enjoyed incredible success last season.
The Milwaukee Brewers may sign former Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen
In the latest article published by Illustrated sportsPatrick McAvoy suggests the Brewers will consider signing former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen, whose one-year deal in free agency is expected to be worth $15 million:
“If the Brewers want to add more talent, they should look for a veteran starting pitcher to facilitate boost the rotation. One underrated player the club should keep an eye on is one-time All-Star Michael Lorenzen.
In seven years with the Reds, mostly as a backup, Lorenzen was 23-23 with an ERA of 4.07 and a WHIP of 1.37. However, since leaving Cincinnati, he has been used primarily as a starting pitcher, although he has played for five different teams in the last three years.
In 2022, Lorenzen was 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 18 starts for the Los Angeles Angels. The following year, he was named to the American League All-Star team, but finished the season 9-9 with a 4.18 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, splitting time with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies.
Last season, Lorenzen was 7-6 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 26 games (24 starts) between the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. It was his time with royalty, and specifically, they may be of interest to the Brewers.
After being traded to Kansas City at the trade deadline, Lorenzen went 2-0 in seven games (six starts) with an impressive ERA of 1.57 and WHIP of 1.08. His addition to the Royals’ lineup helped the team earn a postseason berth, although they ultimately lost to the New York Yankees in the ALDS.
Lorenzen appeared in six playoff games in his career, always as a substitute. His ERA in these appearances is 1.17.
However, $15 million may be a bit too high a price for the Brewers. However, if Lorenzen remains unsigned as spring training approaches, he could lower his asking price.
If that were to happen, he would be a great fit for Milwaukee, both as a starter and backup. His postseason experience will also be an added bonus.
