If in 2024 MLB The season has taught the Milwaukee Brewers anything, and that is that they never have enough starting pitchers. In 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers will have a novel look

Like last season, the Brewers’ starting rotation will feature ace Freddy Peralta, who started a career-best 32 games in 2024, going 11-9 with an ERA of 3.68. Tobias Myers, who burst onto the scene as a rookie last year, started 25 games and finished 9-6 with a 3.00 ERA.

Aaron Civale, who was acquired mid-season from the Tampa Bay Rays, has played in 14 games since arriving in Milwaukee and is 6-3 with a 3.53 ERA. Prior to the trade, he started 17 games for the Rays, going 2-6 with an ERA of 5.07.

2025 is Civale’s last season under club control before he enters free agency.

Since the start of the offseason, however, the Brewers have parted ways with Colin Rea, Frank Montas, Brys Wilson, Miley and Ross. Montas signed with the New York Mets, Wilson with the Chicago White Sox, and the other three remain free agents.

Nestor Cortes was acquired from the New York Yankees as part of the Devin Williams trade to give the team some depth, but Milwaukee still has work to do to get comfortable with the number of starting pitchers it has.

While the Brewers certainly have enough starting pitchers to fill out a five-man rotation, they don’t have enough depth to compete through a 162-game season. For this reason Patrick McAvoy z Illustrated sports suggests the team pursue the three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzerwho is projected to receive a one-year, $15 million contract in free agency this offseason:

“If the Brewers want to add a key piece, it would make sense to add another starting pitcher, and Max Scherzer could be that guy. He’s 40 now and nearing the end of his big league career, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him play for at least another year.”

Last season, Scherzer appeared in only nine games for the Texas Rangers and went 2-4 with an ERA of 3.95. He started 27 games for the Mets and Rangers in 2023, going 13-6 with a 3.77 ERA.

In 2022, while playing for the Mets, he made 23 starts and went 11-5 with a 2.29 ERA.

Scherzer is one of only seven players to win the Cy Young Award in both the American League and the National League. He won it in the AL while playing for the Detroit Tigers in 2013 and twice in the NL (2016 and 2017) while playing for the Washington Nationals.

He has a career record of 216-112 and a career ERA of 3.16.
