Milwaukee Brewers: Assessing concern levels as team struggles to start September with 2-5 losses

This Milwaukee Breweries They haven’t started September on a high note. They’re 2-5 in their first seven games, including three extra-inning losses. They (probably) haven’t played a playoff team yet, their offense is in a slump, and they have some tough competition coming up. Here’s how concerning their play has been over the past week.

The offense was the weakest link for the Milwaukee Brewers in early September.

The Brewers offense has failed to score two or more runs in three contests in early September. Part of the reason they haven’t scored is that they’ve had a tough time getting runners on base. Entering play on Sept. 9, Milwaukee ranks last in September in team batting average (.169) and on-base percentage (.239).

Despite struggling to get runners on base, they are still ultra-aggressive on the bases as their 13 stolen bases this month are second most in the league. Unfortunately, that hasn’t translated into runs scored as their 26 runs scored are the eighth fewest in the month of September.

Who will the Milwaukee Brewers face by the end of the month?

Starting September 10, the Brewers will begin their final West Coast road trip of the year, featuring the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks. They will then return home to face the Philadelphia Phillies, then face the Diamondbacks again, but this time it will be a four-game series. To finish the year, they will travel to Pittsburgh, then return home to face the New York Mets.

How would you rate the level of concern surrounding the Milwaukee Brewers’ current crisis?

On a scale of no concern, low concern, moderate concern, and high concern, I would rate the Brewers’ September slump as average. Teams tend to go through offensive slumps, and it often takes a few things for a team to get out of them. They’ve still managed to put together long at-bats at times and have stayed true to themselves, running on base once, but the bad news is that they’ll have to try to get out of this offensive slump against almost every team competing for the playoffs in the future.

In addition to the offense that is heating up, the Brewers have some weaknesses in the bullpen that should be addressed soon. Hoby Milner has struggled overall this year and has not been a force in key situations since returning from the injured list. Additionally, Bryse Wilson has an ERA above 4.00 after the All-Star break. Bringing back Bryan Hudson and adding top pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski is one way the team should consider addressing that issue.

After a sluggish start to the month, the Brewers have fallen three games behind the Phillies for the second playoff spot. Given their current standings and less than ideal play, the concern level is in the medium category. Hopefully, they can turn things around soon.
