Milwaukee Brewers: Brewers offense looks delicate in 3-1 loss to Cubs

In the first series back from the All-Star break, Milwaukee Brewers rookie right fielder Jackson Chourio looked like an absolute star in the Brewers’ doubleheader over the Minnesota Twins. Last night, Milwaukee took part in the final series against the division rival Chicago Cubs in the 2024 regular season. Before the game began, Cubs manager Craig Counsell was furious in a press conference about third baseman Christopher Morel’s batting.

In this first game between the Brewers and Cubs, Milwaukee’s offense looked delicate, tallying only five hits in a 3-1 loss. The Brewers are 57-43. They currently have a five-point lead in the NL Central. Chicago is now 49-53. The Cubs are nine points behind the Brewers for first place in the division.

Cubs starting pitcher Javier Assad avoided major trouble in the top of the third inning when he threw out Brewers center fielder Sal Frelick on a groundout. A half-inning later, Cubs first baseman Michael Busch lifted an RBI single to center field to give Chicago its first run of the game. In the top of the fourth inning, Cubs relief pitcher Drew Smyly avoided a bases-loaded hit that ended any chance the Brewers had for a solemn run in the game. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong was batting, and when Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers threw a wild pitch, Cubs designated hitter Mike Tauchman scored.

A few innings later, in the bottom of the sixth, Cubs left fielder Ian Happ crushed his 16th home run of the year to right field to give Chicago a 3-0 lead. Milwaukee finally scored its first run of the game in the top of the eighth. Brewers shortstop Willy Adames crushed his 16th home run of the year to right-center field. Other than scoring that one run, the Brewers offense was silenced. They collected five hits in the 3-1 loss. Milwaukee must continue to gain confidence and will need to show up on the road in their next two games against Chicago.
