Milwaukee Breweries GM Matt Arnold reiterated to media members on Friday, July 26, that adding a starting pitching/length option remains a priority as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. Across the league, Zach Eflin and James Paxton have already been traded, and unfortunately for the Brewers, their chances of acquiring a 2024 All-Star starting pitcher have taken a significant hit.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ chances of acquiring an All-Star quarterback in 2024 via trade have dropped significantly.
On X, formerly Twitter, Jon Heyman wrote that if 2024 All-Star Garrett Crochet is traded, he’ll need a contract extension to be able to throw in October. Crochet demanding an extension and indicating he won’t throw in the postseason if it doesn’t happen is a bold strategy, but from his perspective, it makes sense. Crochet is the best arm available at the deadline this year, has a history of injuries, and with two years of arbitration remaining (an $800,000 salary this year), he’s looking for some financial security.
Garrett Crochet declined to comment on the matter and is focusing on playing for the Chicago White Sox.
Scott Merkin, a White Sox reporter for MLB.com, indicated that Garrett Crochet declined to comment on reports of his contract extension request. Crochet indicated that he is currently focused on getting another start for Chicago. He also revealed that his plan going forward is to maintain the starters’ workload.
The Milwaukee Brewers tend to be strategic about contract extensions.
As a small-market team, Milwaukee tends to give out contract extensions at strategic times. They gave Freddy Peralta financial security before he fully transitioned into the starting rotation, Aaron Ashby was similarly extended, and Jackson Chourio recently got a big-money deal before he made his MLB debut, but this could end up being a very good deal for the team in the long run. The chances of the Brewers signing Garrett Crochet and extending him when his value peaks seem unlikely.
