The Brewers offense produced a steady supply of base runners in this game. As a team, they collected eight hits, issued five walks, and stole five bases. They had three extra base hits total, as a William Contreras double (116 MPH off the bat) scored the first two runs of the game and a Joey Ortiz triple in the sixth made it 4-1. Aaron Civale was the Brewers’ starting pitcher in this game. He finished the game with five strikeouts, one earned run, and six strikeouts. After allowing two straight singles in the top of the sixth inning, Hoby Milner came in and replaced him. Milner stranded both inherited runners in the sixth inning, but had trouble in the seventh inning, as he allowed an opener single and then hit the second batter with a pitch.

After Milner struck out on a pop, Colin Rea entered the game in the seventh inning, pitched the final 2.2 innings without giving up a single run and picked up his first career save. Rea has been a mainstay in the team’s starting rotation this year, but he was asked to come out of the bullpen in this game.

The win brought the Brewers’ magic total down to two games. The Chicago Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics on Monday night, but Milwaukee could be crowned National League Central champions tomorrow. In the National League, the Phillies still have the best record (90-60), the Los Angeles Dodgers are second (89-61) and the Brewers are third (87-63). The Dodgers won on Monday night, so Milwaukee didn’t gain any ground on Los Angeles for second place.

The second of three matches will take place on Tuesday, September 17, with the first match scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Central Time.
