Milwaukee Brewers: Colin Rea’s surprise performance against Philadelphia Phillies leads to recent franchise record

The Milwaukee Brewers lowered their magic number to two after won 6-2 at home over the Philadelphia Phillies in the series opener on Monday night. The Brewers, who have won three of their last four games, received a substantial boost from their bullpen, which also received a surprise outing, with Colin Rea helping the team close out the contest.

Rea earned his first big-league save, pitching 2.2 innings in relief against the Phillies. He allowed zero earned runs and just three hits in 29 pitches to shut Philadelphia down. In the process, Rea helped the Brewers set a recent franchise record.

Rea’s performance helped Aaron Civale earn his fifth win of the season. Civale started for the Brewers against the Phillies and allowed just one earned run on seven hits and six strikeouts in five innings on the mound.

Rea was called in to lend a hand out the bullpen after the Brewers had five relievers working in their previous game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, which ended in an 11-10 Milwaukee loss in extra innings.

“He says, ‘Absolutely,’” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of asking Rea to come out of the bullpen for the Phillies game. “That’s the type of guy you want to build a team when you’re in a small market and you’ve had as much adversity as we’ve had.”
