Milwaukee Brewers: Ken Griffey Jr. Sends Message to Willy Adames After Tying Record with 3-Run Home

This Milwaukee Breweries are having one of their most enjoyable seasons in recent memory. Sure, it helps that they’re winning, but it’s scarce for them to be this close to being the best team in the National League. At 81-58, the Brewers are three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and a game and a half behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the overall seeding for the National League Playoffs.

What’s more, their 10-point lead over Craig Counsell’s Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division is the largest lead in all of major league baseball.

The Brewers have had to overcome many obstacles and injuries throughout this long season. Despite this, one player has been in the lineup every day, through it all: Willy Adames.

As of this writing, the Brewers have played 139 games with Adames as the starter at shortstop in every one of them. He hasn’t had a single day off this year to become the designated hitter.

This season, Adames is averaging .255/.337/.474 with 29 home runs and 100 RBIs. No other player in the National League has as many RBIs as he does now (Shohei Ohtani has 99), and no one has played in as many games.

In 2022, Adames set the franchise record for most home runs by a shortstop in a season with 31. He is three points shy of breaking that record. Adames is also just the second shortstop in Brewers history with a 100-RBI season, the first being Robin Yount.

Adames also tied an fascinating Major League record with 13 triple-hit home runs this season. The first player to hit that many triples was Ken Griffey Jr. in 1996.

And judging by the message he sent Adames, he hopes his record will be broken in 2024.

Earlier Wednesday morning, the Brewers shared the following video on social media that Ken Griffey Jr. sent to Adames:

“Hey Willy, congrats on tying my record. Just tell your teammates to get on base so you can break it. Records are meant to be broken, and you’ve got a month, so let’s do it.”

“Congratulations, keep it up.”

One has to assume Adames certainly has his eyes on the record as he hopes to lead the Brewers deep into the postseason this year. Milwaukee has not won a playoff series since appearing in the National League Championship Series in 2018.
