Milwaukee Brewers lose second straight game to Miami Marlins 7-3 on Saturday

Coming into tonight’s contest, the Milwaukee Brewers were looking to rebound from a somewhat disappointing loss to the Miami Marlins on Friday night. With Aaron Civale on the mound, expectations weren’t exactly high, as Civale’s tenure as a Brewers has been a bit of a bumpy one so far.

Before Saturday’s game, the Miami Marlins announced a major trade, announcing that Jazz Chisholm Jr. was being traded to the New York Yankees; in response, the Marlins called up Max Meyer, a player who had a 2.12 ERA in three starts in April.

Milwaukee also announced it had acquired pitcher Nick Mears in a trade with the Colorado Rockies before Saturday’s game.

The Brewers are still without Christian Yelich, and the offense has struggled since the All-Star break. In his absence, Garrett Mitchell has been getting more playing time alongside Sal Frelick and Blake Perkins in the outfield. However, it wasn’t enough, as the Brewers would lose their second straight game to the Marlins on Saturday, 7-3.

The Miami Marlins struck again early in the game thanks to Jesus Sanchez’s RBI double early in the second half, then quickly followed up with an RBI single by Jonah Bride that allowed Sanchez to come home.

The Brewers responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rhys Hoskins hit a three-run homer deep to left center to give the Crew a 3-2 lead. From there, the batters went tranquil for Milwaukee as they never held the lead over Miami.

Nick Fortes tied the score in the top of the seventh on a 3-3 single. After the Brewers struck out Jared Koenig, Elvis Peguero was on the mound and quickly gave up another run, allowing Bryan De La Cruz to hit a lead-off single to escalate Miami’s lead to four.

On the third pitch, Josh Bell swung for a three-run home run deep to center field, and the Brewers couldn’t get their batters going for the rest of the game.

The injury plague continues to hit the Brewers strenuous, as they announced ahead of Saturday’s game that one of their more reliable relievers, Bryan Hudson, would be heading to the 15-day IL with a strained oblique muscle. That comes just a day after the team also announced that LHP Rob Zastryzny had been placed on the 15-day injured list with left elbow tendinitis. With Zastryzny and Hudson on the injured list, both RHP Janson Junk and Tyler Jay were called up and activated.

Nick Mears joins the team as they send pitchers Bradley Blalock and Yujanjera Herrera to Colorado. Mears has a 1.80 ERA in his last 12 games, but his career 4.93 ERA is nothing to brag about. Hopefully, this isn’t the last trade the Brewers make before Tuesday’s deadline, as pitching is a key need at the moment. However, Mears could offer some positives for a pitching lineup that seems to be dropping like flies.

What’s next for Milwaukee…

The Brewers hope to avoid a sweep by the Marlins and will honor Ryan Braun with a spot on the Walk of Fame on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM CST.
