Milwaukee Brewers Magic Number Drops to 9 After Narrow Win Over San Francisco Giants

This Milwaukee Breweries opened a 13-game streak Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. William Contreras, Willy Adames and Garrett Mitchell all scored, Aaron Civale got another good start, Jackson Chourio played great defense and a bullpen anchored by Devin Williams closed out the game.

Early offense was key to the Milwaukee Brewers’ 3-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

The Brewers scored twice on four hits in the first inning. Jackson Chourio doubled the first pitch of the game, William Contreras homered, Jake Bauer singled, and then Willy Adames recorded his 102nd RBI of the year with a single (marked as an out, trying to stretch it to a double). San Francisco responded with a run of its own in the first inning, but Garrett Mitchell’s solo home run in the sixth made it 3-1.

The Milwaukee Brewers allowed just four hits in the entire game.

Other than the Giants scoring in the first inning (an opening walk followed by an RBI double with two outs), the only other time San Francisco scored in the game was on Mike Yastrzemski’s solo home run in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Aaron Civale gave up both runs in the game, as well as three hits. After him, DL Hall, Trevor Megill and Devin Williams all had scoreless outings. The Giants’ only other hit came from Williams in the ninth inning, where he left a runner in scoring position, ending the game and recording his 10th save of the game.

Jackson Chourio made some good defensive plays in this match.

With the wind at Oracle Park, balls were flying everywhere in this game. Jackson Chourio had a couple of risky routes in left field, where he made a catch behind his head against the wall early in the game as he ran toward foul territory, but the wind blew the ball back to fair. He also made a play in the eighth inning that put him in the net in foul territory, where he had the ball ready to be caught.

The Brewers’ win reduced their magic number to nine. In Los Angeles, the Chicago Cubs scored five runs tardy in the game to win their second straight game against the Dodgers. Any combination of nine Brewers wins and Cubs losses would result in Milwaukee winning the National League Division title.
