Milwaukee Breweries GM Matt Arnold made just two acquisitions (RHP Nick Mears and RHP Frankie Montas) in the days leading up to the July 30 trade deadline. He also added starting pitcher Aaron Civale earlier this month. One position he didn’t touch on was the offense, as he didn’t add a hitter despite numerous reports indicating they were looking for a left-handed hitter.
General manager Matt Arnold revealed one major factor why he didn’t sign a player before the July 30 trade deadline.
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Matt Arnold provided the following quote as to why he did not acquire a hitter: “Ultimately, we decided that the group we have here offensively is a group that we really like. We certainly considered alternatives there.” Arnold continued by saying that allowing the team’s teenage hitters to play was also a “big factor.”
Who are the teenage Milwaukee Brewers players?
The Brewers have called up a few rookies in 2023 and given them consistent playing time. Brice Turang, Joey Wiemer and Sal Frelick have been the main guys they’ve relied on, but Blake Perkins has also carved out a role for himself. Wiemer has been playing in Triple-A this year and was recently traded to the Cincinnati Reds, but they’ve been joined by guys like Garrett Mitchell (just back from injury), Jackson Chourio and Joey Ortiz.
How did the Milwaukee Brewers offense fare in 2024?
The Brewers’ teenage players have been playing great baseball this year. They’re not afraid to hit, they see a lot of foul shots when they touch the ball, and they’re aggressive on the bases. As a team, as of July 30, they ranked sixth in batting average (.254), third in walks (391), ninth in runs scored (506) and third in stolen bases (139).
With less than 60 games remaining in the 2024 regular season, it will be engaging to see how the Brewers’ teenage starters fare in the final stretch of the season.
