The Milwaukee Brewers are sure to have quite an engaging offseason this winter. Shortstop Willy Adames will almost certainly leave the team as a free agent. After hitting .251/.331/.462 with 32 home runs, 112 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 2024, Adames is considered the top shortstop on the free agent market. He has no shortage of potential suitors, with the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers among the teams reportedly pursuing him.
While Milwaukee can do little to influence Adames’ final decision, it does have control over where two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams plays in 2025.
There are rumors that the Milwaukee Brewers are interested in trading Devin Williams
Williams is coming off the 2024 season in which he missed the first few months with a stress fracture in his back. But when he returned to the field, he was his typical dominant self.
The 2020 NL Rookie of the Year finished the season with 22 appearances, an ERA of 1.25, a WHIP of 0.97 and 14 saves. But when Milwaukee made the decision to decline his $10.5 million option for 2025, many took it as a sign that they were ready to move on from the two-time Hoffman Award winner.
Even after withering his $10.5 million option, Williams is still expected to make $8-9 million next season. Given the Brewers’ history of trading away many of their stars before they hit free agency, it was assumed they would do the same with Williams.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
Milwaukee Brewers have no plans to trade Devin Williams (yet)
According to a report by Jon Heyman of New York Post OfficeThe Brewers plan to keep Williams through at least the start of the 2025 season. “The Brewers have indicated they will keep him, so a trade for the star closer to the deadline could mean a trade at the deadline.” he wrote.
This is certainly a change in the way Milwaukee usually proceeds, as both Josh Hader and Corbin Burnes were traded before they hit free agency.
On the other hand, the Brewers chose to keep Adames in control of the club throughout his final season because of the leader he is and because they expected competition.
As Milwaukee looks to build on the success they had in 2024 under Pat Murphy, it makes sense that they would want to replicate that success with as many players as possible.
