Unfortunately, the Milwaukee Brewers will likely say goodbye to fan favorite, franchise leader and shortstop Willy Adames this offseason. With the slugger hitting free agency, there is little hope that the Brewers will be able to afford him. In 2024, Adames hit .251/.332/.462 with 32 home runs, 112 RBI and 21 stolen bases. He is currently the top free agent on the market, with plenty of teams vying for his services.
Adames recently turned down a qualifying offer from Milwaukee that would have guaranteed him to stay in the city for another year and more than $21 million. The good news for the Brewers is that since they extended the offer, they will receive a compensatory draft pick if and when he signs elsewhere.
However, gaining an additional draft pick does not address the immediate need they will have once he is officially gone.
MLB insider Mark Feinsand suggests the Milwaukee Brewers will sign Yoan Moncada
Fortunately for Milwaukee, they already have a player on their Major League roster who is a trade favorite: Joey Ortiz. As fans will recall, Ortiz was acquired by the Brewers as part of the Corbin Burnes trade. After entering the Opening Day lineup, Ortiz played most of the season at third base. However, he is a natural intermediary.
With that in mind, MLB insider – suggested Mark Feinsand that Milwaukee will move Ortiz to shortstop and look for a third baseman on the free agent market, and his suggestion is Yoan Moncada, previously Chicago White Sox: :
“Assuming Willy Adames leaves as a free agent, Joey Ortiz will likely move to shortstop, creating a vacancy at third base. The free agent options outside of Alex Bregman are mostly underwhelming, but Moncada – who appeared in just 12 games in 2024 due to injury – has shown he can produce and could be a great prospect at a low buy.”
As Feinsand notes, Moncada has only played 12 games in 2024, which will likely keep his price within the Brewers’ price range.
Moncada was also restricted to 92 games in 2023 and 104 in 2022.
However, in 2019, the former White Sox third baseman hit .315/.367/.548 with 25 home runs and 79 RBI, finishing 21st in AL MVP voting.
Honestly, vilifying a player who had one successful season followed by several years of injury problems sounds so specific to Milwaukee that the suggestion makes more sense than Feinsand might think.
