Milwaukee Brewers: OF Garrett Mitchell is expected to return to Colorado after 3 months on the injured list

Following Sunday’s thrilling victory over the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy told reporters that Garrett Mitchell will join the team in Colorado for a seven-game road trip.

In response to the team activating Mitchell, rookie Tyler Black was optioned to Triple-A Nashville.

Mitchell had not been in the major leagues since Spring Training, when he suffered a broken left finger. He began rehabbing an ACL with the Brewers on June 10 and joined the Nashville Sounds on June 13. Mitchell had a scare in a June 26 game when he suffered an apparent hamstring injury and left the game. The center fielder felt fine and returned to the field for two more games before being called up.

In 14 games at Triple-A, Mitchell had a .314 average with four home runs, four stolen bases, 13 RBI and an OPS of .998. Will he bring that same energy to the major leagues?

Injuries are a concern as Garrett Mitchell returns to action

Garrett Mitchell hasn’t always been lucky when it comes to staying hearty. Since being selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Mitchell has struggled to find a moment of rest.

He suffered a pulled muscle in his knee in 2021. Then he missed two months of 2022 with an oblique injury and underwent surgery in May 2023 to repair a torn ankle labrum. A broken finger and being out for so long with that injury, only to come back and then tear his hamstring, definitely put Mitchell in the spotlight.

How will Garrett Mitchell fit into a crowded field?

In his absence, other players have stepped up their game and become a competitive and dominant force to be reckoned with. With Christian Yelich, Sal Frelick, Blake Perkins and Jackson Chourio on the field breaking the ball, trying to fit Mitchell into the mix will be quite a challenge.

He will likely compete with Perkins to be the fourth outfielder, but he will also need to find a spot in the lineup, potentially as a DH, taking away some of the work Jake Bauers does when he is not playing at 1B.
