The Milwaukee Brewers failed to replicate the success they enjoyed after beating the St. Louis Cardinals to open the series, falling 7-4 to their National League Central Division rivals at home on Tuesday night.
The Brewers and Cardinals needed extra innings to finish the game, with the St. Louis offense securing the victory by scoring three runs in the 12th inning to close the door on Milwaukee in the bottom of the fourth.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised the Cardinals pitchers for doing their job against his men, while also expressing regret over Milwaukee’s destitute offense.
“If you want, you can give St. Louis credit, because I thought they did a really good job,” Murphy said after the game, according to the Associated Press (source: ESPN).
“In my opinion, this was not our normal result.”
Brewers’ offense didn’t deliver the expected results in loss to St. Louis
The Brewers are fifth in the league in scoring with an average of 4.9 runs per game and tenth in batting average, but had scored only three runs by the end of the ninth inning. The game might have ended in the 11th inning when Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI single broke a 3-3 tie, but Willy Adames had an RBI double later in the inning.
The Brewers’ top four players were just 2-for-17, with both hits coming from Jackson Chourio. The Brewers were just 2-for-11 with at least one runner on base and had 17 strikeouts.
Milwaukee will look to provide Colin Rea, the starter for Wednesday, with healthier running support in the final game of the series.
