After a slump in which they lost seven of eight games, the St. Louis Cardinals have shown signs of life recently, winning the last two games of the series against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cards defeated the Brewers on Wednesday in the 10th inning on a game-winning home run by Nolan Arenado. On Thursday, the Cardinals beat Milwaukee again, winning 3-0.
“This is a team with nothing to lose,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said of the Cardinals after his team lost the final game of the series at Busch Stadium, according to the Associated Press (source: ESPN).
The Brewers simply couldn’t generate any offense to support their pitching. Freddy Peralta had a solid outing, allowing zero earned runs and only three hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts in five innings on the mound. Milwaukee let their pitching down as Nick Mears gave up three earned runs on three hits in the seventh inning.
As for the Cardinals, they’re on a roll again. While the Brewers are still miles ahead of them in the division, the Cards have gained some ground in the National League wild-card race.
The loss dropped the Brewers to 73-54 and they are now two games down after winning six in a row, including the series opener against the Cardinals. Despite that, Milwaukee still comfortably holds a commanding lead in the National League Central with 10 games to play against the rest of the division.
Milwaukee now faces a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics, which begins this Friday. Aaron Civale, who is 4-8 with a 4.78 ERA in the 2024 MLB regular season, will start the first game of the series, while the A’s will hand the ball to J.P. Sears (10-8, 4.15 ERA)
