This Milwaukee Breweries are in a bit of a slump as the All-Star break approaches. They have lost six of their last 10 games and, after going 3-4 on a West Coast trip against the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers, began a six-game homestand with a devastating loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After Monday’s 12-2 loss, manager Pat Murphy made the perfect statement.
Monday, July 9: Milwaukee Brewers 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 12.
In Monday’s game against the Pirates, the final score indicated a crushing defeat, but the game was close until the sixth inning. Brewers starter Colin Rea was tagged with seven runs scored, five of which came against him in the sixth inning. The Pirates loaded the bases with three consecutive singles in the sixth inning, and a possible double play was hit to third baseman Vinny Capra, but he was unable to recover it. The play was initially ruled a Capra error, but it was later changed to a base hit after reliever Bryse Wilson hit a grand slam.
In relief, Bryse Wilson was tagged with just one run scored, Hoby Milner with one run scored, and then Joel Payamps with three runs scored. Pittsburgh batted in a total of five home runs, including a solo shot by former Brewer Rowdy Tellez.
Milwaukee Brewers coach Pat Murphy had the perfect response after that devastating loss.
Manager Pat Murphy shared his thoughts after the game on the loss and the struggles of a 162-game baseball season. Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic quoted Murphy as saying, “We’ve got to get back to the way we win games. It’s exhausting. It’s tough. I still love the team and the way they play. I didn’t love tonight. I think you have to wash it off and analyze why you’re where you are.”
The first half of the Milwaukee Brewers season was a success.
Pat Murphy’s postgame comments alluded to his analysis of why the Brewers are in the position they are in. They are 53-39 and have been in first place in the National League Central Division for almost 100 days (98 since July 9). No team wants to limp into the All-Star break, but there are tough times during the season, and Murphy’s comments suggest they need to get back to doing all the little things right to earn more wins.
Milwaukee has five games until the All-Star break. Winning the series against the Pirates and Washington Nationals would be a step back in the right direction for the Brewers.
