Milwaukee Brewers: Pat Murphy has the perfect 3-word phrase to sum up frustrating loss to Chicago Cubs

This Milwaukee Breweries lost their series opener Monday night to the division rival Chicago Cubs. 3-1 was the final score in that game, but the Brew Crew left the bases loaded twice, earned six walks against the Cubs starting pitcher, allowed a run to score on a wild pitch and generally didn’t play a neat game of baseball. After the game, manager Pat Murphy had the perfect three words to sum up this frustrating loss.

Chicago Cubs starting hitter Javier Assad allowed a career-high six bases in the paint but did not allow a single run.

In this contest, Cubs pitcher Javier Assad made his first start since returning from the injured list. He was out of control, as he allowed six walks over 3.1 innings pitched. Milwaukee left the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings and allowed Assad to become the first pitcher since 2016 to issue six walks, throw fewer than four innings, and not give up a single run.

The Milwaukee Brewers did not play a neat game of baseball.

Opposing Assad on the mound was rookie Tobias Myers. Myers finished with 5.1 innings pitched, three runs (two earned), six hits allowed, two walks and six strikeouts. Several unfortunate plays prevented him from making much progress in this game.

Several of these plays include Myers tripping on the mound (resulting in a ball), then Michael Busch hitting a single with two outs to score the first run of the game. Myers also sent a fly ball to center field in the fourth inning after a forced play at second base, and then that runner eventually scored on a wild throw (forcing the next batter to throw out one pitch later to end the inning). Finally, third baseman Joey Ortiz made a good play in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Rhys Hoskins failed to handle a jumper at first base, and as a result, Dansby Swanson reached base on an infield single. That was the last batter Myers faced in the game.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy found three words that perfectly summed up the loss to the Chicago Cubs.

After the Brewers lost 3-1 to the Cubs, Pat Murphy said the loss was “bitchy.” That might be a perfect summary of the game, but Murphy’s full quote really puts it all in perspective. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported the full quote: “It’s frustrating and it’s bitchy, but you understand it. You understand it’s part of the game and you understand it’s part of these guys growing up.”

Milwaukee and Chicago have two more games this week. After that, they won’t meet again in the 2024 regular season.
