Milwaukee Brewers: Pat Murphy Hilariously Explains Why He Came to Check on Jackson Chourio After HBP

This Milwaukee Breweries defeated the Cleveland Guardians 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 72-52 on the season. Now 20 games over .500, Milwaukee leads the National League Central Division by 11 games over the St. Louis Cardinals and 11.5 games over the Chicago Cubs. Colin Rea improved to 11-4 after pitching seven shutout innings. Bryan Hudson and Jared Koenig completed the shutout, and Koenig recorded his first career save.

He is the 11th Brewers pitcher to record a save this season.

As you can see from the score, offense was challenging to come by for both teams. Milwaukee scored both of their points in the first and second innings on well-timed hits. However, they managed only six hits the entire match.

In a scary moment for the Brewers during the game, their youthful outfielder Jackson Chourio was hit in the hand by a ball. With Christian Yelich now out for the rest of the season after back surgery and Blake Perkins on the injured list, Chourio has become an even bigger part of Milwaukee’s everyday lineup.

Fortunately, he avoided stern injury and was able to stay in the game. He also stole his 17th base of the season but did not record a hit.

This season, Chourio is slashing .270/.316/.437 with 15 home runs, 53 RBI, 58 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. He has been particularly good since June 1, slashing .335/.380/.541 during that time.

His recent play showed the baseball world why the Brewers were so willing to offer a massive 10-year contract to a 20-year-old player who has yet to play in a Major League game.

When Chourio was hit in the hand Sunday, Brewers manager Pat Murphy came out to make sure he was OK. Of course he was, and he stayed in the game.

After the match, Murphy joked to reporters that he only went on the field because Chourio was so youthful. By Todd Rosiak With Milwaukee Journal SentinelMurphy joked, “Well, I’ve never been on the field with an injury this year until now. But the only reason I was on the field was because he’s under 21. If you’re over 21, it’s got to be blood or bone.”

There are apparently no concerns that Chourio will have hand pain in the future.
