Milwaukee Brewers: Pat Murphy interrupts Christian Yelich moving to 1B

Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich underwent back surgery during the 2024 season, disrupting his All-Star campaign. He is expected to be fully fit by spring training in 2025, but with outfield teammates like Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, Jackson Chourio and Blake Perkins, there has been speculation among fans that Yelich could switch positions and play as first base or be the designated hitter.

During the Brewers’ end-of-season press conference, Pat Murphy made it clear that Christian Yelich would be changing his position.

Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy does not anticipate a change in Christian Yelich’s position.

Theoretically, moving Christian Yelich to designated hitter or first base makes a lot of sense. From a numbers standpoint, this would provide more consistent playing time for other outfielders while also putting the best fielders on the field. Right now, Pat Murphy doesn’t see a glut of outfielders, but rather a really good group of players. He plans to utilize the designated hitter position to get everyone in the lineup.

“He (Christian Yelich) is a pretty good outfielder and a great player. He’s still very talented there. I don’t think we have a bottleneck there. I think we have a really good pitch. Since the DH is on site, you have four seats for five people. That’s fair. Assuming everyone comes back and there are no other moves.

“If you’re talking about first base, I don’t think that’s going to be in the near future.”

The Brewers outfielder will once again be a candidate to play infield.

During spring training in 2024, outfielder Sal Frelick got plenty of reps at third base. Frelick worked out there regularly, played third base in Cactus League games and even worked out with Dustin Pedroia in the offseason. He ended up playing just four innings at third base, but Pat Murphy said Frelick playing third base in 2025 is “definitely a consideration.”
