Milwaukee Brewers: Pat Murphy makes amusing comments after another starting pitcher was placed on the IL

The Milwaukee Breweries are looking to salvage one game in their series with the Philadelphia Phillies after losing the first two by a combined score of 5-2. When they take the field on Wednesday, they will turn to left-handed starter Aaron Ashby, who was recently called up from Triple-A Nashville. Left-handed reliever Jared Koenig started each of the previous two games as the team’s opener.

The decision to operate Koenig as the opener was due to the numerous sturdy left-handed hitters at the top of the Phillies lineup. However, the decision to draft Ashby, despite his struggles in Nashville, stems from the fact that the Brewers have struggled with injuries in their starting rotation. What’s more, another of their starters is on the injured list.

Moments ago, the Brewers announced on social media that rookie left-hander Robert Gasser had been placed on the injured list. They also selected Janson Junk to Triple-A Nashville. In a similar move, Milwaukee recalled Ashby and rookie Tobias Myers.

Gasser is on his way to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his elbow. Fans may remember that he started the season on the injured list also due to a bone spur in his elbow.

Myers is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in seven games (six starts) for Milwaukee this season.

Gasser joins a long list of injured Brewers starters: Wade Miley, Jakob Junis, Joe Ross and DL Hall.

According to Todd Rosiak z Milwaukee Journal Guardianmanager Pat Murphy was asked whether other Nashville starting pitchers, such as Carlos Rodriguez, were being considered as options for Milwaukee. Murphy confirmed that it was.

He also said:

“If you’re in our organization right now and you’re fit and you’re doing well, you’re being considered. If one day you shoot well from the field, you might be considered too.

While his comment is comical, it shows how much concern there is about Milwaukee’s starting lineup rotation. They remain in first place for now, six games ahead of the Chicago Cubs, but sooner or later they will need to add a starting pitching game.

You can be sure that general manager Matt Arnold will certainly be looking for a starter or two before the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
