Last November, the Milwaukee Brewers signed Colin Rea to a one-year, $4.5 million contract extension. It also includes a club option for the 2025 MLB season worth $5.5 million. Given the way Rea has played this season, this deal looks like a bargain.
Rea impressed again on Sunday, going hitless until the sixth inning. 2-0 victory over Cleveland Guardians. He finished the game with zero runs allowed and five strikeouts while allowing just two hits over seven innings. It was the second of his last three starts in which he threw seven scoreless innings.
After the match, Brewers manager Pat Murphy did not skimp on praise for the 34-year-old Rei.
Via Associated Press (source: ESPN):
“He was just a tremendous anchor,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said. “He really is. He gives it his all every time. What you see is what you get. That’s who he is as a person, every day the same, every day doing everything he can to help everyone around him, no matter the mission. A great teammate. I can’t say enough about him.”
In 24 games (21 starts) during the 2024 MLB regular season, Rea is 11-4 with a 3.52 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. His ERA+ of 119 is also a career best by a wide margin.
Next up for Rea and the Brewers is a three-game road series against the St. Louis Cardinals, which begins Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.
