This Milwaukee Breweries They have gone extra innings in three of their last four games. Unfortunately, they have lost all three, with one loss coming to the Cincinnati Reds (11 innings) and two to the St. Louis Cardinals (12 and 10 innings). Their most recent loss to the Cardinals came after a controversial move by manager Pat Murphy in the 10th inning.
Pat Murphy tried to earn a spot in the 10th inning of a game the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2.
With the score tied 2-2 in the 10th inning, Brewers manager Pat Murphy sent Joel Payamps up the mound. Payamps had two outs on four pitches, but with Nolan Arenado scheduled to be on third base for the inning and a ghost runner on second, Murphy decided to intentionally walk Arenado and bring in left-handed hitter Hoby Milner to face left-handed batter Brendan Donovan.
The Cardinals responded by taking advantage of right-handed pinch hitter Luken Baker. Baker eventually scored the game-tying RBI. Baker had the game-tying pinch hit home run against Milwaukee in their last August series, and once again he was a large deal for the Cardinals in this one.
Milwaukee Brewers fans were unsure why Pat Murphy made the decision he did in the 10th inning.
I don’t understand the logic behind wanting Milner vs. Donovan so much more than Payamps vs. Arenado, especially since there are already two outs and the Cardinals were going to play a pinch-hitter with RHB against Milner anyway.

I’m not a large fan of deliberately bringing players onto the field in extra innings… especially when it’s done to get Milner on the mound.
Questionable decision making. We’ll see how it goes.

Murph decided to intentionally walk Arenado with two outs (totally fine). But instead of letting Payamps face left-hander Brendan Donovan… Hoby Milner would come in.

Pat Murphy explained his decision-making process.
After the game, Pat Murphy was asked about his decision to lift Joel Payamps, intentionally leave Arenado, and bring in Hoby Milner. Murphy’s response was that he didn’t want to face Arenado, Payamps was pitching and warming up a lot, and he was running out of gas, and that he didn’t expect the Cardinals to replace Donovan in that situation. He also added that he liked Milner’s chances to get the ball.
