The Milwaukee Breweries they lost their last game to the Boston Red Sox 2-1, but secured the series win with wins on Friday and Saturday. As of this writing, the Brewers are three games ahead of the Chicago Cubs under Craig Counsell, whose game against St. Louis Cardinals is currently experiencing a weather delay. Chicago has lost three straight games and is just 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Of course, these two teams begin a four-game series on Monday at American Family Field in Milwaukee. This will be Counsell’s first game against his former team in the stadium he once called home. There is a lot of hype surrounding this series among Brewers fans for obvious reasons.
That being said, it doesn’t look like Brewers players view the upcoming series the same way their fans do.
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich comments on the hype surrounding the upcoming series with Craig Counsell and the Chicago Cubs
The Brewers have faced their former manager in one series already this year, namely three players to whom Milwaukee lost 2-1 in early May. Players didn’t make a large deal about it then, and star outfielder Christian Yelich says they don’t make a large deal about it now.
According to Adam McCalvy– said Jelich,
“I think it will be more from a fan perspective. We have to go out there and win the game. It’s players against players. Managers put players in position to win the game, but ultimately it’s us who decide the outcome on the pitch.
“That’s how we looked at it [when the teams played] In Chicago. I understand this story from the perspective of the fans and everything that happened. For us, it is an attempt to win another series against a division rival. It’s going to be a big four days for us.”
So while Yelich and the rest of the team may not harbor any animosity towards their former manager, they are still well aware of how important this franchise is as Chicago is their division rival. As we mentioned, the Cubs are currently three games behind the Brewers. If Milwaukee doesn’t capitalize on these league games now, it could mean a tighter race in September.
Milwaukee Brewers rookie Robert Gasser is excited to pitch against the Chicago Cubs
Starting left-handed pitcher Robert Gasser never pitched for Counsell outside of spring training. He has yet to start against the Cubs since being called up earlier this year.
However, competing is something he is very excited about. According to McCalvy:
“I was thinking back to college and it’s really cool that I get to play on the field in a competitive game for the first time in a minute. We’ve been on a long journey, but I’ve been staring at her for five days now. I’m ready for the Cubs.”
Gasser is scheduled to pitch for the Brewers in the first game of the series on Monday. He is currently 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in three starts.
The rookie left-hander is coming off the worst start of his newborn career after giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in six innings against the Miami Marlins.
Chicago counters with left-hander Justin Steele, who is 0-2 this season with a 5.68 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. However, Steele is 2-2 with a 2.64 ERA against Milwaukee in his career.
