Milwaukee Brewers: Robert Gasser gets a third opinion on his elbow

Milwaukee Breweries Rookie southpaw Robert Gasser had a pretty impressive start to his MLB career before he was sidelined with an elbow problem. The 25-year-old started the year on the injured list with an elbow, and after re-bending his elbow, he received three different opinions on how to deal with it. Now he must decide how to proceed.

Robert Gasser’s first two opinions differed in how he dealt with the elbow.

According to MLB.com, the first opinion Gasser received indicated that he could treat his elbow with rehab. The second opinion, from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, recommended reconstructive surgery of the ulnar collateral ligament. Given the various options, Gasser decided to get a third opinion.

The third opinion was obtained from Dr. Keith Meister.

Robert Gasser selected Dr. Keith Meister as the provider from whom he would obtain a third opinion. Dr. Meister performed shoulder surgery on Brandon Woodruff during the offseason. The Texas surgeon also operates on elbows, having performed elbow surgeries on Tyler Wells, Felix Bautista, Sandy Alcantara, Jacob Degrom and many others.

Milwaukee Brewers Robert Gasser must now decide how he wants to proceed.

According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the opinion Gasser received from Dr. Meister was consistent with Dr. ElAttrache’s opinion on the need for surgery. Gasser must now decide whether he wants to continue with rehabilitation or surgery. Elbow rehabilitation may allow him to continue throwing this year, but it carries the risk of delaying surgery that may be necessary in the future.
