The Milwaukee Breweries they now have a four-and-a-half-game lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division after a 5-1 victory over their fierce rivals on Monday afternoon. Of course, the game generated a lot of fan interest because it was the first time Craig Counsell returned to American Family Field after leaving the Brewers to become manager of the Cubs.
Although the Brewers were able to score five runs, they didn’t get there until the eighth inning. Sal Frelick, who led off the bottom of the eighth with a substantial single, walked and scored on an error. A few batters later, shortstop Willy Adames belted a three-run home run into left center to give Milwaukee a 4-0 advantage. Jackson Chourio added an RBI double later in the game.
While the late-game offensive heroics should be celebrated, it’s vital not to overlook the dominant pitching of rookie left-hander Robert Gasser.
Robert Gasser was everything Milwaukee brewers needed
It’s no secret that the Brewers have been dealing with injuries in their starting rotation since before the season even started. Brandon Woodruff re-signed a two-year contract with the knowledge that a shoulder injury and recovery from last year would keep him sidelined through 2024.
Wade Miley, Jakob Junis, Joe Ross and DL Hall have been on the injured list since the start of the season. Everyone is still working there, and Miley will be out for the entire year due to needing Tommy John surgery.
With their starting rotation in shambles, the Brewers turned to Gasser, who was originally acquired by Milwaukee in the trade that sent Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres.
In Monday’s game against the Cubs, Gasser entered the seventh inning, allowing just three hits, no walks, no runs, and striking out a career-high seven.
In his previous start, Gasser threw six innings against the Miami Marlins. He allowed four runs and 10 hits, but his ability to go six innings saved the beleaguered team. He recorded victories in his two previous starts.
In other words, Gasser did everything Pat Murphy asked him to do.
Robert Gasser made history for the Milwaukee Brewers in a game against the Chicago Cubs
As mentioned, Gasser went six innings and did not allow any runs against Chicago. After four starts, he is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.96 and a WHIP of 0.96. He has only passed one batter since arriving in the Majors.
According to Curt Hogg from Milwaukee Journal GuardianGasser is only the third Brewers pitcher in the last 40 years to post an ERA below 2.00 in his first four career starts:
Robert Gasser is the third Brewers pitcher in the last 40 years to post an ERA below 2.00 in his first four career starts. The other two are named Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta.

As Hogg notes, the other two are Woodruff and Freddy Peralta.
This is quite good company and shows that the starting rotation, although currently injured, has a glowing future ahead of it.
