This Milwaukee Breweries implemented an captivating strategy early in the 2024 MLB Draft. They selected Braylon Payne and Blake Burke with the 17th and 34th picks, both of whom signed contracts below their estimated slot value. They selected a pair of promising New Jersey prep players with the 57th and 67th overall picks, hoping to steer them away from college commitments.
The Milwaukee Brewers player, selected in the second round of the draft, officially signed a contract with the organization worth $1 million more than the contract value.
Second-round pick, right-handed pitcher Bryce Meccage, signed with the Brewers for $2.5 million. The slot value of that pick was $1,562,100. Milwaukee saved about $1.1 million when Braylon Payne signed below the slot value, so all of that savings essentially went toward luring Meccage away from the University of Virginia.
Can the Milwaukee Brewers acquire Chris Levonas?
Drafted just 10 picks after Bryce Meccage was right-handed pitcher Chris Levonas. He has a college commitment to Wake Forest. His estimated slot value at 67th overall is $1,230,000, and the Brewers will have to exceed that amount to pry him away. As mentioned, Milwaukee also saved money when Blake Burke signed for about $500,000 less than his slot value, so perhaps all of those funds will be redistributed to Levonas to sign him.
When is the deadline to sign players selected in the 2024 MLB Draft?
According to MLB.com, each team has until 5 p.m. ET on August 1 to sign 2024 MLB Draft picks. In addition to the difficult work of getting Chris Levonas signed, the Brewers are also dealing with the stress of the July 30 trade deadline.
