The Milwaukee Breweries have selected college players first in each of the last five MLB drafts. Players acquired during this period were Brock Wilken (2023), Eric Brown Jr (2022), Sal Frelick (2021), Garrett Mitchell (2020) and Ethan Small (2019). As the 2024 project approaches, the latest sample design from Joe Doyle has them select a college hitter who previously had a 47-game hitting streak.
The Milwaukee Brewers select Seaver King 17th overall in MLB’s latest 2024 mock draft.
On July 14, the Brewers will have the 17th pick in the draft. In Joe Doyle’s latest mock draft, they selected all-rounder Seaver King. The Wake Forest infielder (played third base, shortstop and second base) plus outfielder (started the year in center field) is one of the best contact players in the draft, has impressive bat speed and has shown the ability to hit with both metal and wood bats.
Seaver King had a 47-game hitting streak in 2022-2023.
Initially a Division II college baseball player out of Wingate, Seaver King posted a 47-game hitting streak spanning the 2022-2023 seasons. In 2022, it dropped to .381/.449/.640, and that number jumped to .411/.457/.699 a year later. In 399 plate appearances, he struck out just 44 times.
Thanks to Wake Forest, Seaver King continues to post outstanding results.
After two successful seasons in Wingate, earning Valley League MVP honors in 2022 and greatness in the Cape Cod League in 2023, Seaver King transferred to Wake Forest for the 2024 season. This year he is hitting .316/.386/.594 and 16 home runs. Additionally, he walked 25 times compared to 32 strike outs.
According to MLB.com, Seaver King is the 13th best prospect in the draft. He may need some luck to beat the Brewers at 17, but if he’s there, he puts a lot in front of the Brewers.
King specializes in putting the ball into play with a compact right-handed shot focused on hitting lines to all pitches. However, he needs to improve his discipline at the plate, as he swings and chases too much, which causes him to make impoverished contact and lower his walk totals. While he has gained 20 pounds since arriving in college and has impressive bat speed, his approach and flat style may not be conducive to more than 12-15 homers per year.
With well-above-average speed and solid arm strength, King is a versatile defender. He started this season as a center fielder before settling in at third base, also playing in the outfield and at second base. He would have the greatest value in the short-stop game, although he is only average there and would need to improve his actions and accuracy of throws. He is solid in other situations and may be best on the pitch because his hands are fine
