Milwaukee Brewers: Willy Adames listed as trade target for No. 1 NL West team fighting for playoff spot

Milwaukee Breweries Team leader Willy Adames has been and will continue to be mentioned in trade rumors leading up to the July 30 deadline. Despite the Brew Crew commanding the National League Central, there is still a belief that GM Matt Arnold can turn the corner away from the best impending free agent in the league.

Considering there are already plenty of talented goaltenders behind Adames, a theoretical deal would certainly have to address Milwaukee’s glaring need for starting pitching. On the Fansided blog Around the Horn of Mist hinted at this possibility, but also used the San Francisco Giants’ rationale for acquiring Adames to thwart the Los Angeles Dodgers’ plans to acquire him.

After spending money in the offseason on Blake Snell, Jordan Hicks, Jung Hooe Lee, Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman, the Giants are currently below .500, but are still among the teams that could compete for the final wild card spot. Nick San Miguel of Around the Fog Horn writes that shortstop is a position they could re-evaluate at and that perhaps the Brewers would consider trading Adames to them because they believe they would be less of a threat than the Dodgers.

Theoretically, the Giants could improve at the shortstop position. After Nick Ahmed’s injury, they replaced several players. Right now, Brett Wisely is playing great both offensively and defensively at shortstop. However, if he cools down before the trade deadline, the Giants may have to re-evaluate their options at shortstop.

What players could the Milwaukee Brewers acquire by sending Willy Adames to the San Francisco Giants?

Nick San Miguel suggested that the Giants could combine Alex Cobb and Marco Luciano in a trade package. Cobb is an experienced right-handed starting pitcher with an ERA of 3.85. The only problem is that the 36-year-old had offseason hip surgery, suffered a setback in his throwing program and has not pitched in the major league this year. Luciano is the Giants’ top MLB prospect, having already made his MLB debut, and his speed is exhilarating and produces high exit velocities.

Most likely, the Giants would have to give up at least one player who could lend a hand the Brewers right away. They may have to give up a package consisting of Marco Luciano and Alex Cobb or something similar that they may not be willing to do.

The Milwaukee Brewers would be better off targeting a controllable starting pitcher like Kyle Harrison as part of a potential Willy Adames trade scenario.

Trading Milwaukee for a currently injured starting pitcher when Joe Ross, DL Hall, Wade Miley, Jakob Junis, Robert Gasser and Brandon Woodruff are already on the injured list doesn’t seem like the best move. Even if Cobb recovers by July 30, the Brewers will only have control over him for a few more months because he, too, is a soon-to-be free agent.

Milwaukee could request a trade for linebacker Kyle Harrison. He has started 14 games for the Giants this year and has an ERA of 3.96. The 22-year-old will not be eligible for free agency until 2030, and he still has a few years left before arbitration.

If the Brewers are going to trade Willy Adames and acquire a hearty starting pitcher who can lend a hand them now, it would be in their best interest. In this scenario, Kyle Harrison would be preferred to Alex Cobb, but it would ruin Milwaukee’s chances of acquiring Marco Luciano.
