Milwaukee Breweries Shortstop Willy Adames made history Tuesday night when he stole his 20th base of the season. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted that he is the first shortstop in franchise history to steal 20 bases and hit 30 home runs. Adam McCalvy of MLB.com also noted that he is on the brief list of shortstops to do so while also collecting 100 RBIs.
Willy Adames stole his 20th base of the season against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
In the second inning, Willy Adames stole his 20th base of the season from Pirates pitcher Bailey Falter. With that steal, he became the fifth Brewers player to reach 20+ stolen bases this year. According to Curt Hogg, Adames said a few days ago that a friend texted him and asked, “You have 18 stolen bases. What are you doing?” Since then, he has stolen in two more games and reached 20.
No other shortstop in Milwaukee Brewers history has recorded 30 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season.
As mentioned, Willy Adames is now the first shortstop in Brewers franchise history to hit 30 home runs and steal 20 bases in a single season. Interestingly, in addition to Milwaukee shortstops, Gunnar Henderson (37 home runs, 21 stolen bases), Bobby Witt (32 home runs, 31 stolen bases) and Francisco Lindor (31 home runs, 27 stolen bases) have also accomplished this feat.
If we factor in Willy Adames’ 100 RBI, he joins a very brief list of shortstops to achieve that kind of season.
According to Adam McCalvy, only four shortstops since 1901 have had a season with 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases and 100 RBIs. Bobby Witt did it this year, Trevor Story in 2018, and then Alex Rodriguez in 1998 and 1999.
