Milwaukee Brewers writer unexpectedly adds $20.5 million pitcher to closer conversation

The Milwaukee Brewers traded two-time Trevor Hoffman Reliever of the Year Award winner Devin Williams this offseason, leaving a vacancy at the closer position. However, this is a situation that situation manager Pat Murphy encountered last season when Williams was recovering from stress fractures in his spine. While the Brewers have several options to fill the closer role, one MLB writer recently surprised fans by adding an unexpected name to the conversation

The Brewers have a lot of options to consider when it comes to the closer role this season. Trevor Megill, the favorite to start the year at the position, led the team with 21 saves last year. Other returners include Joel Payamps who made six saves, Abner Uribe with three saves, Elvis Peguero with two and Jared Koenig who had one save.

On MLB.com, writer Adam McCalvy predicted who will explode in 2025. He chose Aaron Ashbywho signed a five-year, $20.5 million extension with the team in 2022. McCalvy noted that Ashby has had several mini-breakthroughs in the large leagues, including last year when he found success away from the ballpark. He also admitted that the team may initially choose him as a starter, but the fallback solution is to put him in the cage where his skills are good enough to be considered in a closer conversation.

How did Aaron Ashby perform away from home a season ago?

Last year at the MLB level, Aaron Ashby made 12 relief appearances and pitched 19.2 innings. His three earned runs allowed for an ERA of 1.37. In addition to his significantly increased velocity while relieving pain, his strikeout-to-walk ratio was also impressive, as he fanned 28 batters and walked only three.

Heading into 2025, Aaron Ashby will be looking to build on the confidence he gained last season. He demonstrated the ability to achieve pre-injury speed following major shoulder surgery while producing positive results on the mound. The large question will be what role he takes on next year, and given his effectiveness away from home last season, it’s exhilarating to think about what he can achieve.
