Milwaukee Bucks fans expected Damian Lillard to be the missing piece to facilitate Giannis Antetokounmpo win his second NBA title with the team. Although they tried difficult during the 2023-2024 regular season, the Bucks ultimately defeated the Indiana Pacers in the first round.
While some fans may feel like Lillard performed poorly in his rookie season with the Bucks, it’s difficult to deny that Dame is still the best player to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in the upcoming campaign. The franchise and its fans need better play from Dame as the Warriors seriously pursue their star player.
To further reinforce the belief that Dame needs to improve his game next season, one analyst points out that there is a growing number of people who doubt his and the Bucks’ chances of winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

For Bucks Pass Dalton Sell reported that Ben Rohrbach ranked Dame Time as the 10th best second option in the league. For a player who amazed fans and frustrated opponents with his outstanding offensive play, the rankings have had an adverse effect on his performance.
He further argues that Lillard will likely apply this defeat as fuel to improve his performance and return to form during his final year with the Portland Trail Blazers:
Given all the doubts and talk of him being “washed”, the guard should be motivated to prove his doubters wrong. He may never see this ranking, but if he were to check it out, it should blow his mind, just like every other ranking this offseason in which he snubbed Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks.
The only way to remove doubt is to win and that should be everyone’s main goal.
It’s understandable why Rohrbach ranked Dame so low after his stellar swan song with the Blazers. Lillard averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.0 assists for 73 matches. These numbers were a far cry from the stellar numbers he put up during his final year in Portland (32.2 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 7.3 APG).
If Lillard can achieve at least 90% of his 2023 production this coming season, the Bucks will be a tough team to beat.
