Milwaukee Bucks CEO speaks out on Doc Rivers’ coaching staff

It wasn’t just the roster that the Milwaukee Bucks made changes to this offseason. The front office also made sure to equip the team with the best coaching staff in the league, with Doc Rivers at the helm.

Players have circumscribed options on the basketball court and it goes without saying that coaches play a crucial role in the success a team will achieve.

Experience is key on Rivers’ staff. It’s not enough that Rivers himself has two and a half decades of NBA coaching experience behind him. The Bucks went out and made sure they had one of the most experienced, if not the most experienced, coaching staffs in the league.

However, according to general manager Jon Horst, Rivers will always play the most crucial role.

“Of course, starts with Doc and his skills,” Horst said. “People have a lot of respect for him all over the league. Coaches do. Coaches want to coach for him and with him and learn from him. I’ve felt that here, in our time together so far, it’s obvious. So I think that’s where it starts.”

At the same time, Horst is incredibly confident in the people Rivers has around him. The 62-year-old point guard can’t do it alone, and he has a great group of coaches behind him who are helping him achieve his goals with the team.

“You have Doc Rivers as your head coach,” Horst continued. “Darvin Ham, who led his team in difficult circumstances to the conference finals. Dave Joerger, who led his teams deep in the playoffs and has hundreds of wins as a head coach in the NBA. Greg Buckner, who is probably one of the most respected, if not the most respected, best assistant and defensive mind in the game.”

Horst had no shortage of praise for the rest of the coaching staff, which includes Rex Kalamian, Joe Prunty and Vin Baker.

Horst believes Milwaukee’s coaching staff is as good as any in the league.

“I’ve spent a lot of time with them,” he said. “They’re one of the best groups of professionals and people I’ve ever been around. They’re just very energetic, positive, curious, creative, so I love the group of adults and professionals that we have, from a playing perspective, a coaching perspective, a front-office perspective.”
