The Milwaukee Bucks went all-in last summer when they decided to part ways with Jrue Holiday in the blockbuster Damian Lillard trade. At this point, it wouldn’t be too strenuous to figure out who won that trade — at least for now.
Ultimately, Holiday won his second career championship with the Boston Celtics last season, while Lillard had to come to terms with an early first-round draft loss to his recent team.
Milwaukee Bucks News: Jon Horst Has No Regrets
One of the main proponents of last year’s landscape-changing deal was Bucks general manager Jon Horst. In a recent interview, the Milwaukee boss was asked if, now that he has the benefit of hindsight, he would agree that the Bucks are better positioned to have Holiday at point guard over Lillard.
Horst was brutally truthful in his answer.
“We’ve talked about this a little bit in some of the other media sessions I’ve been in, but I agree. And I’m not sorry about that” Horst told Eric Nehm of The Athletic. “I think it’s just the nature of our business. We had an offseason. We built the team, and then we had an incredible opportunity to get an NBA All-75th Anniversary team, a top-75 player, and pair him with another NBA All-75th Anniversary team, a top-75 player at the end of the offseason, and we did that. And then we tried to do the best we could, and then we put the team together after that.”
While it’s clear Horst regrets his decision, he is also convinced it was the right one.
The good news for the Bucks is that they still have a chance to prove to the basketball world that trading Lillard was the right move. That all starts this upcoming season, and Horst, for his part, is eagerly awaiting that opportunity.
“So I’m really looking forward to this year. I think the guys are too. There’s motivation in that,” he said.
“Obviously we have to be healthy so we can realize the benefits in the playoffs of some of those really strong regular-season metrics that we had, but I think all of those things are going to be better. And we’re going to figure out how to be healthier and continue to have success, not only in the regular season but in the playoffs.”
