It’s been over a year since the Milwaukee Bucks made a shocking trade to acquire superstar point guard Damian Lillard from the Portland Trail Blazers. Before the trade, the Miami Heat seemed like the favorite landing spot for the future Hall of Fame guard.
During a recent podcast appearance, Lillard recalled the summer he was traded to the Bucks, sharing his feelings about being sent to Milwaukee amid noise that suggested he would go to the Heat instead (h/t Sports rush).
Dame was recently in Get Got Podcast with Marshawn Lynch when he expressed his feelings about his complicated departure from Portland. “I’m in a great situation, but when I thought I was going to, you know, go to one place and then ended up going somewhere else, it changed my experience,” Lillard commented on the deal.
To freshen the mood, Lillard was traded to the Bucks in a three-team deal that also involved the Phoenix Suns. The Bucks acquired Lillard and the Blazers received Jrue Holiday, a 2028 first-round draft pick, a 2030 first-rounder, Deandre Ayton and Toumari Camara. Meanwhile, the Suns signed Grayson Allen, Jusuf Nurkic, Nassir Little and Keon Johnson.
Damian Lillard’s first season with the Milwaukee Bucks
In his first season with the Bucks, Lillard averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 7.0 assists while shooting just 42.4% from the field and 35.4% from beyond the arc.
Despite Lillard’s addition to the roster, the Bucks won nine fewer games than their win total in the 2022–2023 season and were also eliminated from the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
