Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki recently hosted former Milwaukee Bucks player Thanasis Antetokounmpo on his podcast. Thanalysis show tell a lot of stories and share his thoughts. Among the topics covered during the podcast, which lasted just over a half-hour, was former Bucks coach and current Mavs mentor Jason Kidd.
When Antetokounmpo said he thought Kidd was the “closest thing to [a] “European coach” and that Kidd has “changed” since his time with the Bucks, Nowitzki apparently agreed (source: Christopher Kuhagen of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).
Kidd is a completely different coach now than he was when he started with the Bucks in 2014, during Giannis Antetokounmpo’s second year.
“I’ve heard some stories from Milwaukee,” Nowitzki said. “I think he was a little bit… (The Bucks) were a young team at the time. He wanted a little more control.”
It is worth recalling that Kidd was traded by the Brooklyn Nets as a coach to the Bucks in the summer of 2014. Then, after the deal was finalized, Bucks general manager John Hammond was delighted with Kidd.
“When you list the traits that make a good head coach, you would include leadership, communication and competitive spirit,” Hammond said (via ESPN). “Jason parlayed all of these traits into becoming a 10-time NBA All-Star, and now he’s translated his success on the court to the bench. We welcome him to the Bucks organization and look forward to building a championship-caliber team with him as our head coach.”
Despite expectations, Kidd failed to lead the Bucks to postseason success, posting just a 4-8 playoff record during his time in Milwaukee.
Kidd was the Bucks coach from 2014 to 2018, when he was fired by Milwaukee after the team started the season 23-22.
