Even though the Milwaukee Bucks lost to the Los Angeles Clippers in their Summer League matchup, rookie AJ Johnson still came out and played well on the court. As a result, franchise fans were excited about his preseason performance.
Bucks lost to Los Angeles result 97-112 in the NBA Summer League game. Despite sturdy performances from point guard Ryan Rollins, who led the game with 24 points, and first-round draft pick AJ Johnson, who scored 22 points, the Bucks were unable to overcome a double-digit deficit that the Clippers built in the second quarter.
MarJon Beauchamp, the Bucks’ 2021 first-round draft pick, struggled mightily, hitting 2-of-9 shots from the field, scoring 6 points, committing 3 turnovers and committing 5 fouls in 31 minutes of play. The Bucks coaching staff initially planned to limit Beauchamp’s playing time, but with Bucks head coach Doc Rivers in attendance, they decided to give him more minutes.
Milwaukee managed to cut the lead to five points in the third quarter, led by Rollins, who scored 10 points in the quarter. However, the Clippers eventually pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure a double-digit victory. One notable injury was Andre Jackson Jr. leaving the game in the first half with a bandaged finger, and it is unlikely that he will reappear in the Summer League.

“He’ll be nice, mate,” Ghost shared.
Johnson, a 6’4″ guard, came from the NBL’s Illawarra Hawks. Despite limited playing time in his first professional season, the rookie showed potential with his size, athleticism and ability to create his own shots, making him useful in certain situations. One recent example was when All-Star guard Damian Lillard led the Bucks without Giannis Antetokounmpo in Game 1 vs. Indiana Pacers in the playoff series a few months ago.
There are still a few months left until the NBA returns this year. If Johnson plays like he did against the Clippers, the Bucks will have no choice but to give him some minutes on the court, or the fans will revolt.
